Affiliate marketing is an Internet business that is easy to start with little money. An affiliate marketer is an independent contractor. You need to create a website or have some means offline that you can use to sell other people's products. Many affiliate marketers have been able to quit their regular jobs and devote their time to affiliate marketing. It is not a "get rich scheme." You have to work at it as you would any business. There are many types of goods and services to sell. You have to find your market and you have to build a customer base.

There is a law against spam. Subscribers must be given the choice to opt-in to receive email from you. Otherwise, it is spam and can be reported. If reported, you will need to explain to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) what happened. If they are not satisfied with your explanation, they may discontinue your service.

When you use email marketing on a regular basis, you will want to set up an autoresponder. An autoresponder is a service provided by ISPs and independent companies to send email to your subscribers. You create the messages and indicate when you want them sent and it is done automatically. You can also use autoresponders to collect subscriptions to your blog or your newsletter or emails.

One of the most effective and free marketing tools you can use is article marketing. Website owners, ezine publishers, and bloggers need quality content to keep their websites up-to-date. Writing articles about topics you are familiar with or research and submitting them to ezine directories can get your website or blog noticed by millions of readers around the world. You are able to include information about yourself and your website in the resource box. People who read your article may click on your website and if they see something they like, they may buy from you. Having your articles published on other websites and blogs will also give you back links to your website which may raise your page ranking.

When starting a home based business there are steps you need to take to assess whether it is really something you want to do. You also have to list your business ideas and  decide on what you are going to do. Start your business with this initial step. Work through it, develop a business plan, marketing strategy, and design your web site.

Your website is your face on the World Wide Web. It is what people see and it makes them either trust you enough to buy from you or makes them turn away from you. Good website design is important. Your visitor should be able to navigate through your website with ease to find the information they are looking for. You can have your site designed by a professional or you can purchase templates that have been created for specific products or services. You can also create the site and update it. There are expensive and elaborate programs or you can opt for user-friendly software. When you are in control of your website, it is easier to maintain. You can make updates or corrections whenever you need to.

Other ways of promoting your products and services are by being active on forums with people who need your products and services and also by using viral marketing. Viral marketing works in two ways. You can market via social websites such as My Space. You can create videos and upload them to YouTube or Google. Many website owners may find your video fits their product  or service and may use it. You can also create pages with information that relates to the use of your products or services on websites such as Squidoo and HubPages. Another way to use viral marketing is to create an information product with links to your products. You embed the links in the ebook and the visitor clicks on it to visit your website or link to the product you are selling. You give this information product for free to the visitor. It is also a means of having visitors sign up for your newsletter.
